Guide to the Geology and Mineral Resources of South Australia.

$15.00

As the title implies, the book is intended as a guide to the geology of South Australia. It has been compiled from the work of many geologists. At the end, there is a list of general references which have been used in the preparation of each chapter. These will provide details which cannot be included in a guide of this kind, and further references which are too numerous to list.
South Australia has had a very long geological history traceable back for over 2000 million years. It has areas of ancient basement rocks and of younger rocks representing most of the geological column, which are exposed at the surface or have been revealed by deep drilling in exploration for minerals, petroleum and natural gas.

Description

Geology is the study of the earth-its origin, history composition and structure. A modern tendency is to qroup geology and its associated sciences such as geography oceanography, meteorology and astronomy together under the single term earth sciences. Like all other sciences, geology is itself divided into or closely related to a number of specialist fields of study:
Geology is, however, essentially a study in the field with the object of producing maps which can be used for practical purposes such as the location of mineral deposits, petroleum and natural gas supplies or underground water. Most people seem unaware of the importance and availability of geological maps, and this book will include a list of those already prepared in the State mapping programme and where they are available. The simplified maps in the book are based on published maps of the Geological Survey of South Australia which should be consulted by those who seek more detailed information on the distribution and sequence of rocks in any particular area.
