South Australia’s Mining Heritage

$15.00

South Australia’s mining heritage not only traces the story of mining and its people, but also interprets mining sites, and demonstrates the importance of the mining industry to South Australia’s cultural and economic development.

In a series of articles-originally presented as papers at a seminar on mining heritage-together with photographs and diagrams, South Australia’s mining heritage forms an informative kaleidoscope.  Mining sites, machinery, communities, conservation, families and individuals are included; and read as a whole or as separate articles, this adaptable and absorbing book is an invaluable reference for those with an interest in South Australia’s history.

Description

Conserving our heritage has become an important community issue.  Mining, which at times saved the fledging colony of South Austrlaia from bankruptcy, is a vital part of that heritage.

Sites and relics of South Australia’s early mines-engine houses, brick ruins, massive pieces of machinery left over from the Industrial Revolution which have been generally neglected, are now being recognised as containing the threads of a fascinating story.

And the story is essentially one of people: the thousands of Cornish immigrants who came to mine South Australia’s riches, bringing their methods and technology with them.  Often working under harsh and dangerous conditions, these religious, hard working and taciturn people have left a cultural legacy unique in Australia.
