Description

John Mc Douall Stuart has been described as “the king of Australia’s explorers”
Four times he set out from Adelaide between August 1859 and October 1861, hoping to be the first European to cross the continent from south to north and back.  He did not lose the life of one man on any of his journeys although on the return of his final, successful, expedition of 1861-63 he almost lost his own.
This is his enthralling account of the landmark journey across the continent from Adelaide to Indian Ocean and back.  He left in October 1861 and returned in December 1862.  In January 1863 he was given a hero’s welcome in a procession through the streets of Adelaide; on the same day, Melbourne was holding its own procession – the funeral of Burke and Wills.
